THE RENO PAELLA COOK-OFF
This is a culinary stand-off like you’ve never seen before. In this combat-style cooking competition, classically trained chefs and home cooks alike will take to the streets as they go head-to-head in cooking one of the most difficult dishes around the world – PAELLA.
Come join us at Battle Born Beer for music, drinks, paella and a good time! Celebrity chef, Dave Preston, provides play-by-play coverage as you watch these rugged contestants battle it out. You’ll see their creative flavor twists on this well-known classic, and feel the heat rise as the countdown flies. Who will take home the trophy? PAELLA [ PRONOUNCED PIE-YAY-AH ]
This classic saffron-spiced rice dish originally hails from Spain and is a beloved classic. But there’s just one catch – the secret touch that makes a truly perfect paella is that it’s gotta have that socarrat! It’s a crispy layer at the bottom that has just the right amount of crunch and must never be burned. It’s tricky, it’s delicious, and it’s precisely what makes this a challenge for even the most experienced chef.
PLEASE NOTE: Paella will be served throughout the event by Reno’s own Big Blue Q! This is a true culinary competition where the competitors will be judged by professional judges and not required to feed spectators.

Chef Daniel Carter, award winning chef and chef at Patagonia in Reno, NV has a plan to win the title with his creative style and beautiful presentations.
TEAM BABIECA
Cesar Garcia and Eddie B. are bringing on the challenge with classic Spanish flare and a Northern Nevada twist.
Team Basseterria
This team is not new to the fine art of cooking Paella. Expect team leader Lisa Zabalegui to bring the heat with a Basque style favorite.
Team Cucina Lupo
Led by one of the top chefs in Nevada, this team has what it takes to win the trophy. Matt Farag brings an amazing game to the competition.
Team Bella Italia
Chef Giuseppe Zappala is no rookie. But can his Italian chops stand up in a Spanish game? This team has years of experience and serious presentation skills.

Team ¿Que Bola Asere?
Bringing in the Cuban style Paella, Damon Booth and Maykel Solas will be making the other competitors nervous with their creative secrets.
Pamplona Basco Team
This team brings the heat and delivers a Basque style that is a special blend of traditional Basque plus Northern Nevada! Chef Cheryl Valcarce is no stranger to Paella and may just be the one to bring home the trophy!
The Titans of Meat
Chef Josh Paulman and Jack Green break out of the butcher shop and onto the Paella scene with a plan to take the trophy!
Team Paella Sierra
A newcomer to Reno, but not to Paella! Acho Martiarena was born with a paella pan in his hands and plans to do combat with his secret family recipe!
TEAM HEYDAY INN
Straight outta Wellington, NV, this team is ready to battle it out for the best paella!
TEAM 1864
From Reno, Nevada, this team is lead by Jim Rhea, and will be going big with a traditional paella Valencia.
THE RULES
Teams must cook outdoors and provide their own custom cooking setups. These may include gas, charcoal, wood, or any other cooking method. All cooking must take place in an outdoor setting, but some prep may be done in advance if needed.
